The People Who Keep Appearing

Maitei!
There is a particular kind of person I have always found fascinating.
You meet them.
Life moves on.
Years pass.
And then somehow they appear again.
Not intentionally.
Not because either of you planned it.
Not because you carefully maintained the connection.
Yet there they are.
Again.
I have experienced this enough times that I no longer consider it unusual.
I simply smile when it happens.
Life seems to enjoy reintroducing certain people.
Sometimes they appear in entirely different contexts.
You meet someone through work.
Years later they reappear through a friend.
A former colleague becomes a customer.
A customer becomes a friend.
A fellow traveler becomes a business connection.
A business connection unexpectedly becomes part of your social circle.
The path between those points often makes very little sense.
Yet somehow it happens.
One of the unexpected gifts of spending many years traveling was discovering just how small the world actually is.
On more than one occasion, I met someone in one country only to encounter them again somewhere completely different.
The first time it happened, I was astonished.
By the fifth or sixth time, I simply accepted that the universe enjoys repeating itself.
Or perhaps we do.
Perhaps we are drawn toward certain kinds of people.
The thoughtful ones.
The adventurous ones.
The generous ones.
The curious ones.
The people who make us feel more ourselves when we are around them.
Maybe those qualities create invisible threads that continue pulling lives back together.
I am not entirely certain.
What I do know is that some people seem to belong to multiple chapters.
They are not always central characters.
Sometimes they appear only briefly.
A conversation here.
A chance meeting there.
A message arriving at precisely the right moment.
A familiar face appearing when you least expect it.
Then they disappear again.
Until the next chapter.
Years ago I might have assumed these recurring appearances were coincidences.
Now I am less certain.
Not because I believe every encounter is destined.
But because I have learned that meaningful connections have a remarkable ability to survive distance, time, and changing circumstances.
People grow.
They move.
They change careers.
They marry.
They divorce.
They travel.
They reinvent themselves.
And yet some relationships somehow adapt alongside them.
I find that deeply comforting.
There is one particular type of reunion I especially enjoy.
It happens when two people reconnect after many years and immediately begin speaking as though they saw each other last week.
No awkwardness.
No performance.
No effort.
The connection simply resumes.
Those moments remind me that some relationships are built on something deeper than proximity.
The friendship was never truly dormant.
Life was merely busy.
I have also noticed something else.
The people who keep appearing are often the people who teach us something important.
Not always through formal lessons.
Sometimes simply through their example.
Sometimes through their encouragement.
Sometimes through a conversation they themselves have long forgotten.
Yet somehow their influence remains.
Perhaps that is why they keep returning.
Or perhaps we simply notice them more because they mattered.
Either way, I have learned not to resist these recurring appearances.
When someone unexpectedly returns to my life, I no longer ask:
“Why now?”
Instead, I find myself wondering:
“What chapter are we entering next?”
Life has surprised me too many times for me to dismiss these things.
The world is vast.
The odds are often absurd.
And yet certain people keep finding their way back to us.
I think that is one of life’s most beautiful mysteries.
Mis mejores deseos,
Tammie
